Abstract
The purpose of this NORDTEST Oil Spill Identification system is to establish identity or non-identity of a sample taken from a spill with samples taken from suspected sources. The system contains recommended methods for sample collection handling and analysis.
The samples in question are described by a variety of parameters. Identity or non-identity is established solely by comparing the analytical results, but any other relevant information that could identify the source should be evaluated in the report. The identification system is applicable to petroleum oils and the analytical results are intended to be used as evidence in court.
This system may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. It is not intended to address all the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of whoever uses this identification system to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
