Abstract
The aim of the project was to transfer and exchange information on waste leaching tests gained in Nordtest projects. Nordtest supports the development of common research methods in the Nordic countries and has also published several test methods.
The results of its activities have also enabled significant influence in the European standardisation work in this field. The project provided the Baltic countries knowledge for future selection of waste evaluation practices, as they have to implement the landfill directive in their legislation.
Two workshops and a practical testing (round robin testing) formed the important part in the actual knowledge transfer. Through practical work participants gained compentence in performing leaching tests, particularly of Nordtest-method ENVIR 005 almost identical to the CEN-method EN 12457-3. The round robin test also offered valuable information on the precision of the Nordtest method for possible updating in the future.
The outcomings of the project and results on round-robin tests were disseminated in the form of a common paper published in native journals in the Baltic countries.
This document is the final report of the project entitled: “Waste testing in Baltic countries – Transfer and exchange of information on leaching tests ” financed by NORDTEST.
The project was initiated in June 2002 and ended in November 2003. The project was carried out by VTT from Finland in cooperation with its Danish partner DHI – Water and Environment. Following Baltic institutions were represented: Tallinn Technical University (Estonia), EcoLab (Estonia), Laboratory of Environmental Agency (Latvia) and Joint Research Centre, Environmental Ministry (Lithuania).
