Matresses - Burning behaviour - Full scale test (NT TR 602)

  • A new test method for testing of fire properties of mattresses is proposed. The method is intended to evaluate the full scale burning behaviour of a complete mattress or bed system when exposed to a flaming ignition source. Fire performance criteria, for mattresses used in public occupancies, are proposed.

  • I projektet har självkompakterande betong med respektive utan fibrer samt en konventionell betong, K30 ingått. Av dessa göts provplattor som sedan exponerades för brand enligt ett standardförfarande. Ur plattorna och ur referensprover borrades kärnor för vidare provning. De metoder som tillämpats är tryck och spräckhållfasthet, ultraljud, BET, mikroskopi samt borrmotstånd och punktlastindex.

Fire-LCA guidelines (NT TR 583)

  • Fire-LCA is an LCA method that incorporates fires as one possible end of life scenario. It was developed by SP and IVL in order to be able to assess lifecycle aspects of the fire performance of products. This report gives guidelines on how to perform a Fire-LCA study. They are written based on the experience made during the development and application of the Fire-LCA methodology to different case studies.

Modelling of the radiative feedback from the flames in cone calorimeter (NT TR 540)

  • The ignition and combustion properties of building materials are often studied using the Cone Calorimeter (ISO5660:1993, NT Fire 048:1993), where the sample is heated by a temporally and spatially constant incident radiative heat flux. After ignition, however, the heat transfer characteristics are changed due to the flame radiation and convection.

Improving heat fluxmeter calibration for fire testing laboratories (HFCAL) (NT TR 527)

  • Tests of resistance to fire, representing fully developed fires, use more and more often heat flux gauges. In reaction to fire testing the initial stages of the fire are considered, ranging from smouldering cigarettes to small flames and "Single Burning Items". To characterise the thermal load to the test specimen, all national and international test methods need a direct measurement of the heat flux incident on the specimen.

Uncertainties in measuring heat and smoke release rates in the room or corner test and the SBI test (NT TR 477)

  • When performing fire testing and classifying materials, Heat Release Rate (HRR) and Smoke Production Rate (SPR) are two of the most important quantities to determine. Physical interpretation of temperature data measured in the SBI fire test (NT TR 416)

  • In the SBI fire test, there are temperature sensors in the exhaust duct allowing measurement of the temperature rise of the exhaust gases (T measurement). In principle these sensors provide means to monitor the production rate of thermal energy.

Curtains and Drapes: Flammability

Nordtest project 116-77

  • The main object of this project, which is Nordtest-project 116-77, (148-78), was to develop a Nordtest-method for testing the flammability of curtains and drapes. The aim was also to develop a proposalfor classification of the fire safety of curtain and drape materials, if possible.

    About 50 typical curtain and drape materials were tested by six known methods. The results were compared with results given by full scale experiments.

    In many respects BS 5438:1976 proved to give similar results as full scale experiments. This method is therefore proposed for Nordtest-Method, with some minor compliments. The BS 5438:1976 is included as Appendix 1.

    A proposal for classification of the flammability of curtain and drapery material using the proposed test method is included as Appendix 2.

    Classifying the curtain and drapery materials belonging to this project according to the proposed test method (Appendix 1) and the proposed classifying method (Appendix 2) is included as Appendix 3.
